Dick Horner

Dick Horner describes Christian Science as the guiding light of his life, and he continues to practice it because he’s witnessed firsthand the transformative power of healing through prayer and spiritual understanding. His unwavering faith has shaped his journey, leading him to dedicate himself to the Christian Science movement, a commitment that has spanned nearly five decades.

For 49 years, Dick has faithfully served as a Christian Science nurse, primarily providing private duty care and spiritual support to those in need. His role has been more than just a job; it’s a calling, one that allows him to witness God’s healing power on a daily basis. His experience is vast, not only in the technical aspects of nursing but also in the deeply spiritual nature of his work. He has witnessed countless healings and approaches each case with the understanding that true health and healing must be manifested. His expectation is that his services will no longer be required, as the healing power of God takes full effect.

The joy Dick experiences in his work is rooted in the simple, yet profound, moments of healing. He finds great fulfillment in witnessing his patients rediscover their inherent joy in everyday activities—whether it’s a patient who regains the ability to walk again after years of limitation or finding peace and comfort in familiar routines. For Dick, these moments are a testament of God’s ever-present love, expressed in the most beautiful and transformative ways.

The Willows is a very special place,” Dick says, his voice full of warmth and conviction. “I can just feel it.

However, Dick’s journey has not been without its challenges. For the first 40 years of his career, he lived a nomadic lifestyle, never having a permanent home. He either stayed with patients or lived with friends between cases, always prioritizing his spiritual mission above personal comforts. That all changed when Dick moved to The Willows. Here, he’s been blessed with something he never had before—a permanent home. For the first time in his life, Dick has a villa of his own, a space where he enjoys the comforts of home while continuing his spiritual work. He also feels a deep connection with the residents of the community. Dick takes great joy in running errands for neighbors, checking in on fellow residents, and offering a helping hand whenever it’s needed. In addition, he serves on The Willows Residents Association Board as the Welcome Program Coordinator—a role that perfectly suits him—helping new residents feel embraced and supported when they move in. “The Willows is a very special place,” Dick says, his voice full of warmth and conviction. “I can just feel it.”

Living at The Willows has not only provided Dick the stability of a home but has also opened new opportunities for him to continue serving the Christian Science movement in new and meaningful ways. He remains active as a part-time private duty nurse, caring for patients both at The Willows and the broader community. In addition, He serves at his local branch church and Reading Room in Pasadena, supports churches across Orange County, and runs a national "Book Exchange" that distributes Christian Science literature to branches throughout the country.

Dick frequently reflects on the uniqueness of The Willows, describing it as a vital part of the Christian Science movement. He understands that the metaphysical thought that fills the campus is not only transforming the lives of its residents but also making a far-reaching impact on the world. For Dick, The Willows is more than just a place to live; it’s a vibrant, spiritual community where healing and love are at the heart of every interaction.
